HBO Films Lands Rashid Johnson-Helmed Sundance Pic ‘Native Son’
Ahead of its premiere tonight at Sundance, the Rashid Johnson-directed Native Son has sold to HBO in the first splashy deal of the festival. It will premiere on the payweb later this year. Sources are saying this deal falls in the 8-figure range.
Based on the seminal novel by Richard Wright and with a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, the film was produced by A24 and Bow & Arrow, latter of which financed. It marks the filmmaking debut of Johnson, a lauded visual artist. Pic is a re-imagining of the 1940s Richard Wright’s seminal novel, as a young African-American man named Bigger Thomas takes a job working for a highly influential Chicago family, a decision that will change the course of his life forever.
This becomes the latest collaboration between A24 and HBO, following 2 Dope Queens and the upcoming series drama Euphoria.
Matthew Perniciaro and Michael Sherman of Bow and Arrow produced it and Stephanie Meurer is exec producer.
Moonlight’s Ashton Sanders plays Bigger Thomas, and the cast consists of Margaret Qualley, Nick Robinson, KiKi Layne, Elizabeth Marvel, David Alan Grier, Sanaa Lathan and Bill Camp.
UTA reps the director and screenwriter.
