When a fan on Twitter asked Garner if the Mortal Kombat news was valid, specifically the inclusion of new characters like Cole Turner and his scrappy 12-year old daughter Emily, Garner replied that any news is premature. The previously mentioned Cole Turner was rumored to be the lead in the new franchise film. Cole is a struggling boxer from Philadelphia who gets more than he bargained for when he signs up to take part in a martial arts tournament across dimensions. Returning characters in the leak included stalwarts Kano, Liu Kan, Raiden, Sonya Blade, Mileena, Jax, Shang Tsung and many more. News of a Mortal Kombat reboot first arrived in 2016, with James Wan tapped as a producer and Australian director Simon McQuoid in talks to helm the project. Debuting in 1992, the Mortal Kombat video game franchise quickly gained notoriety for its violence and “Fatalities,” in which players are able to unleash often-gory executions on defeated opponents. In 1995, it was adapted as a moderately successful movie, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Christopher Lambert, which spawned the 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Production on New Line Cinema’s Mortal Kombat reboot does not have an official start or release date.
